Know what to do if stopped by Police
Stopped by the police?
During A Traffic Stop
- Keep both hands on wheel unless told to do otherwise.
- Tell your passengers to remain silent. They do not have to answer any questions.
- Give the officer your drivers license, insurance, and registration. DO NOT answer any other questions.
- If the officer asks, “Is there any reason why I can’t search your car?”Say: “No, but I don’t consent.”
If Stopped on Foot...
- DO NOT answer friendly questions like: “Where are you going?”
- If an officer stops you on the street and asks questions, they are looking for a reason to arrest you.
- Instead of answering questions, ask “Am I under arrest, detained, or am I free to go?”
- DO NOT be tricked into making a statement.
- If you are detained, you are not required to answer questions. Request a BRCK Attorney, and then remain silent
- DO NOT give fake information such as name or date of birth.
Anytime
-
Police are valuable public servants, but they are not your friends.
-
DO NOT argue or curse with officers. This will only intensify the situation and can be used against you later on.
-
If you are arrested, ask for an attorney IMMEDIATELY. DO NOT answer any questions or make any statements.
-
DO NOT make statements about the incident to anyone other than a BRCK Attorney.
-
DO NOT be coerced into pleading GUILTY or “NO CONSENT” under any circumstances.
